In 2002, The Life Monologue Project
co-founders Tanya Taylor and Pamela Thompson asked me
take portraits of individuals living with cancer for their
book, The Cancer Monologue Project (MacAdam/Cage). Taylor
and Thompson teach writing and performance workshops to people
with cancer, HIV and AIDS. These workshops give individuals
the opportunity to express their personal story in a
monologue that they write and then perform at a
theater to an audience of friends, family and community. Many
of my friends and colleagues have asked me if it was depressing
to spend two weeks shooting portraits of people with cancer. Far
from it. In the honesty and courage of these people —
both in front of the camera and in their words, I found true
inspiration.
